Unpopular Opinion Book Tag
The Unpopular Opinion Book Tag was created by TheBookArcher and you can see the original video here. As you might've guessed from the name, the purpose is sharing opinions that most people disagree with. I love seeing and reading those, so I thought I'd do one myself 😊
Please note that all opinions are my own and I do not mean to offend or harm anyone. Disliking books or characters is not a personal attack on the author. And of course, you're free to disagree with me!
A popular book or series that you didn't like.
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. I didn't think this book was as great as most other people (I actually thought it was pretty weak), but there were other reasons why I didn't like it as well. The topic of disability was handled very poorly in this book, and it has hurt me personally and a lot of other people. You can find my review here (sorry to start it off with such a serious topic. Usually, I do follow the hype of books, at least partially)
A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.
The last book in the Divergent trilogy. I honestly don't really see why people dislike that one because I thought it was a good ending? But, to be honest, it's been ages since I read it, and I probably liked everything I read back then 😊
A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with.
The Selection. Not so much in the first three books, but the last book (The Crown, you can read my review here) just didn't work for me.
A popular book genre that you hardly reach for.
Historical fiction. I don't know why, really. I think I've just read one or two that I really didn't like and it made me very wary of the genre in general. I've also read historical fictions that I did like, but it's stuck in my head that if that's the genre, I probably won't like it and thus won't pick it up.
A popular or beloved character that you do not like.
Severus Snape. I love the Harry Potter series with all my heart, but Snape is horrible. I know I'm not the only one who thinks that, but he isn't a hero. He isn't suddenly a good guy. He's childish and narrow-minded and never got out of his childhood grudges, to the point of being willing to sacrifice a capable teachers career over it. He bullied a young teenager so much that he became their worst fear. That's absolutely horrific. I also dislike the "find someone who loves you like Snape loves Lily" idea. He loved her so much that he didn't want for her to be happy if that meant she'd be without him. Or so much that he hated and bullied her son. Or that he wasn't willing to give up the Dark Arts for her. I don't know, I'd rather not be with someone like that.
A popular author that you can't seem to get into.
Gayle Forman. She's the author of If I Stay and Where She Went, amongst others. I have read three of her books so far, and they always leave me feeling meh. They're just not for me, I think.
A popular book trope that you're tired of seeing. (examples "lost princess", corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)
Definitely girl on girl hate. We've seen enough of that and it can just go away now. That goes together with the "I'm not like other girls" girl. Honestly, I'm really tired of it.
A popular series that you have no interest in reading.
A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). I watched the first season of the series, but it wasn't really my thing. I probably like my books a little less violent, and maybe a little smaller 😂
The saying goes "The book is always better than the movie", but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?
Lord of the Rings. I'm sorry, I just couldn't get into the books and stopped reading them somewhere halfway the second. They were too big, too slow, too boring even maybe? However, I really like the movies. They're also long, but a lot easier to keep paying attention to and I'm pretty impressed with them.
I hope I can still be friends with y'all now you know this! 😊 What are your unpopular opinions?
