REVIEW: Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

It's been over a month since I read anything in this book and I have no desire to pick it up again.
This story has a lot of things going for it. It's funny in a very sarcastic and satirical way. It's feminist and has a lot of rep. At times it was surprising. It has great quotes and I absolutely loved some parts. However, in my opinion, it's too long. It drags. I stopped caring and started wishing it was almost done by the time the pirate ship came into view. Not even how much I liked it at first was enough to compensate for how much pages I read solely for the purpose of advancing in this book so it would be finished soon.
I liked the interactions between the girls, how they grew and changed, how they tried to live on this island. I couldn't care less about the Ladybrid story arc or the m/f relationships though. I also didn't like how the one f/f relationship ended halfway the book whilst there was so much space for plenty f/m ones. Some things about the transgender rep also raised some questions. There was a lot of transmisia from the other characters, but Petra herself also said that since she hadn't had surgery yet, she "wasn't technically a girl yet." I encourage you to read the reviews from Taryn and Chelsea, who both finished the book and go into these issues in a lot more detail, whilst also raising other valid points of criticism.
