REVIEW: An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
This book was great. I loved it and immediately decided that therefore, all of my friends have to read it too.
It's set in a world much like ancient Rome, and adds some fantasy elements.
It's fast paced, but not in a bad way. You don't have to run to keep up, but you also don't have to sit around waiting for something to happen. There's a lot of action and some political play.
The amount of character development is stunning and i loved all of them. (Except that crazy iron faced bitch, of course.)
It's intriguing and i read it all in one setting, after which i immediately started on the second book.
It is a hard book though. The tension and the danger was real. Threats of rape and mutilation were not just empty threats, and you could feel it. Because of those things, I would maybe classify it as NA, rather than YA. But then again, i don't know what kids and young adults are used to, and if you use NA to say there's graphic sex, that is not what i mean at all.
A strong 5 stars and a staggering debut. Highly recommended.
